Kidney Volume Calculator (ultrasound)
Notes
- This calculator uses an ellipsoid formula:
- volume = length × width × thickness × π/6
- While this formula has been widely used in the literature, it has limitations. Prior studies comparing the formula to MRI or CT-based volumetry as ground truth has found that this ellipsoid equation tends to underestimate kidney volume by ~15- 25%.
- It has also significant intra-, and interobserver variability, which should be taken into account if comparing results with prior measurements.
